Most electron transport measurements on QDs performed to date have used the two types of QD described above. The lateral arrangement offers a relatively high degree of freedom for the structure design, which is determined by the choice of electrode geometry. It is also possible to fabricate and study artiﬁcial molecules [63–69] that are composed of several QDS, linked together. By using the vertical arrangement, structures with very few electrons can be achieved  and, indeed, much effort is currently being expended on investigations into many-body phenomena with these QD systems.
